My PhD project was based on developing new bioinformatics pipelines for studying bacterial communities in different environments and in connection with human diseases (in particular Cystic Fibrosis disease). I worked on microbiome and metagenomic data obtained from a large set of peculiar environments (from forest soil to harsh environments like iper-saline ponds), as well as data obtained from several districts of human body.
As a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Biology of Florence University, I am working on the impact of bacterial communities on the reduction of pulmonary efficiency in patients affected by Cystic Fibrosis focusing my attention on selecting new pathogen species through bioinformatic analysis of metagenomic data. In addition, I am working on development new bioinformatic softwares for analyzing both metagenomic and genomic data through innovative approaches based on HMM and Modelling algorithms.
